Scene1. Class Note: Trouble with Computers

 請注意觀察以上的對話:

1. Q: 這段對話可能是在哪裡進行的? 為甚麼聽到 A 說: "Can you pass the sugar, please?" 請上討論區,發表你觀察的心得.

A: Dana Murphy老師說: 聽起來應該像是在"break room" or "lunch room" 員工休息室. It usually has coffee, a refrigerator, a microwave, some vending machines. 如果A是在辦公室,做在她的電腦桌前,抱怨說電腦軟體太難用,她會說""THIS new software is driving me crazy", not THE software." 因為所談的東西就在眼前.她會用"THIS" ,她就不會說 : the new software.

2.  Q: B 說 "Why don't you sit down for a minute? You haven't taken a rest all morning." 看起來, A是站著,請B 把糖遞給她 pass the sugar?這是怎樣的情況呢? 是不是有點怪?

A: Dana Murphy老師說: I can see how this may seem strange.但是如果你想像A走進 break room,她站著替自己沖杯咖啡,然後就準備走回辦公區. 所以 B就跟她說,坐著休息一會兒. (However, imagine she walked into the break room and was standing at the coffee pot filling up a cup with coffee - maybe to take back with her to her desk.)
3. Q: A 說 "The new computer software is driving me crazy! I really need a break!" 她需要一個 break,這是甚麼意思?

A: Dana Murphy老師說: It sounds like she needs a break from her computer!
暫停,離開電腦一會兒.休息 10分鐘. Just 10 minutes or so to walk away from her desk. She may have been about to return to her desk with the coffee, or stand around the coffee room and stretch her legs and drink the coffee.
4. Q: B 表示有同感,說,"I know what you mean." 請看看還有類似的說法嗎? 請上討論區,發表你的說法.

A: Dana Murphy老師說:
"I couldn't agree more."
"I know what you're going through."
"I know exactly what you mean."
"I can relate!"
還有比較近俚語的用法:Other ways (a little more "slang" and maybe difficult for Chinese speakers to relate to):
"I hear you!"
"You're telling me!"
5. Q: (1)"I've had nothing but trouble with it. "
(2)"I have nothing but trouble with it."
(3) "I had nothing but trouble with it."
請比較以上三句的異同.

A: Dana Murphy老師說:

I think (1) is the best way because it is saying she has HAD trouble and continues to have trouble.

(2) "I have nothing but trouble" - this could be okay, (1) is more common and more natural but this also is fine.

(3) "I had nothing but trouble" - 用了過去式,表示現在沒麻煩了. this doesn't work here because it means she HAD trouble, but no longer has trouble, the trouble is over! It changes the meaning. 意思和 (1)與 (2)不同.
6. Q: "I've had nothing but trouble with it." 還有別的類似說法嗎? 請上討論區分享你的講法.

A: Dana Murphy老師說:
"It's been giving me fits!"
"It's been driving me crazy!"
"I've had all kinds of trouble with it!"
"It's been a nightmare!"

7. Q: "They say it's supposed to be easy!" 這裡 they 指誰? The software company?

A: Dana Murphy老師說: Probably, but it could also mean other people, the "general THEY" of the world. 不一定指誰,就是一般人. People say this all the time!!! In fact, we have an expression: "You know what they say?" As in:
"You know what they say, the early bird gets the worm!"
"You know what they say, the harder you work the more successful you'll be!"
"They say Macs are very easy-to-use computers."
"They say Hawaii is the most beautiful place in the world." 你有一些 'they say' 的句子想跟我們分享嗎? 其實"they say ...."就是一些流行的想法,請上討論區發表.
8. Q:A 說:要天才才搞得懂! "It takes a genius to figure out." 有沒有類似的說法?

A: Dana Murphy老師說: Yes, this is a pretty common expression. Other ways:
"You'd have to be a genius to figure it out."
"I'm completely stumped." (I don't understand it)
"You'd have to be an Einstein" (this refers to Albert Einstein, the
famous scientist)

9. Q: A請 B pass the sugar. B說: sure.
A: Can you pass the sugar, please?
B: sure.
B除了 'sure'之外,還可以說甚麼?

A: Dana Murphy老師說:
"here you go"
"No problem"

10. Q: 整個對話的口氣是_________?

A: Casual 輕鬆的口氣 (because they use such common idiomatic expressions,用了不少成語) An idiom is just an expression that is used so much it has become a phrase, such as "driving me crazy"

11. Q: 這段對話中,A的名字是__________,B的名字是____________

A: A的名字是 Carol, B的名字未知.
