Scene2. Class Note: Complaining about overtime

1. Q: A說他被 "elected to do overtime" -- 'elected'是甚麼意思 ?

It doesn't mean elected as in "voted." There were not people or a person who voted and elected. It's an expression which means, "I got picked." It's an expression that means you got stuck with something - usually something bad. Examples:
"Looks like I got elected to wash all the dishes tonight."
"Well, I see no volunteers . . . Sandy, you're elected!"

2.  Q: A說 "I've already logged in 20 hours of overtime!"

A: Dana Murphy老師說: It means "I've done" or "put in".
It stems from the word "log", a document on which you would write down your hours. (You know, on a ship the captain keeps a log, or record, of the miles the ship has traveled) Even though it technically means to record, this expression just means you've done the work, not that you've written it down.

Here's another example: 300 miles.
"I have logged over 300 miles in six months." (this is a runner
tallying miles, they may or may not be written down or "logged")
3. Q: B說, 'Wow!'

A: Dana Murphy老師說: Yes, WOW is used correctly here. It expresses disbelief or amazement.
"You're kidding!"
"No way!"
"Unbelievable!"
4. Q: A 說上級有說要派助手給他,可是, "So far nobody's turned up,' 這是甚麼意思?

A: Dana Murphy老師說: He's saying that he has not yet been provided with an assistant. He's being kind of sarcastic. No one has come - but that's because his boss or the company has not provided him with an assistant. No one can "turn up" if they're not hired. It's a phrase we use to show it hasn't happened yet - in this case, a person hasn't shown up.

5. Q: A說 : "I'm left on my own" 換句話說,就是 ____________ (請上討論區,說一說你的解釋)

A: Dana Murphy老師說: It means I have no help, it's up to me and no one else.
6. Q: B看A忙成這樣,她說, 'They are really running you into the ground.'

A: Dana Murphy老師說: They (the company) are working him really hard. Another popular saying, "They're working me to death."

Why don't you ask for some time off?" 是 'take a leave' 嗎 ?

A: Dana Murphy老師說: No, I think she means a day or two, maybe even a week, but not an actual leave of absence for a month or a year or something. "Take a leave" means an extended time. (take a leave是比較長的假) "time off" means a short time, like a vacation.

A: Dana Murphy老師說: I agree with you. I think she means that he should take some time off AFTER the Baker account is caught up, or finished. I think that's implied because here, too, we wouldn't just leave a project in the middle of it.
9. Q: What is taking a long weekend like?

A: Dana Murphy老師說: It could mean take Friday off and returning to the office Monday and therefore having a "three-day weekend" (Friday, Saturday, Sunday.).
I think it means three days more than four. Another way to get three days is to work Friday and take Monday off.

10. Q: 在此對話, A的名字是______,B的名字是________.

A: A,B 的名字皆未知.
